Curating Spaces of Hope: Transformational Leadership for Uncertain Times
What might a political theology of leadership look like in uncertain times? Curating Spaces of Hope explores how individuals and communities work together to shape and contribute to society in times of pandemic, Brexit, war, and a cost of living crisis, through the exploration and development of local leadership practice underpinned by shared values. Expanding on William Temples’ three key social principles for our own times, Matthew Barber-Rowell suggests 'freedom, relationship, service, affect and authenticity' as critical values which are vital in influencing wider society in troubled times.
"Matthew Barber-Rowell reinterprets or even reinvents the Temple legacy for the first half of this century" (Professor Simon Lee, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the William Temple Foundation)
“[the] well-narrated experiences and detailed arguments offer an encouraging and hopeful case for the transformative leadership that he commends”. (Sir Stephen Timms MP)
“This is a pioneering book of exceptional erudition … It is an exercise in Christian social ethics that could be defining for the moment in which we live. A must read”. (President of Virginia Theological Seminary, Ian Markham).

Conference Proceedings: Communicating Radical Hope in an era of poly-crisis
The conference was derived from two main sources. 1) dialogue in summer 2024 between Nicky Burridge, Vice President for Communications and Institutional Advancement at Virginia Theological Seminary and the General Theological Seminary, New York, and Dean’s Scholar and Temple Fellow Dr Matthew Barber-Rowell, and 2) the Radical Hope campaign, roots for which can be found in our 2024 ebook and a 2025 volume by Barber-Rowell Curating Spaces of Hope: Transformational Leadership for Uncertain Times published by SCM Press.
