Curating Spaces of Hope
Curating:
The approach we take to nurturing the spaces we open up is 'curating'. We use this for all manner of things from holding dialogues, to developing networks, to forming partnerships to growing the movement. Curating can be understood in two general ways. 1) drawing different things together as part of an exhibition. 2) caring for others, which adapts the traditional language of 'cure of souls' in a parish. So what we do is curate Spaces of Hope, which enables people to work together towards the deep and authentic flourishing and wellbeing of everyone in different spaces, places, projects networks and across our movement. We use 5 ideas to add detail to the process of curation, they are freedom, relationship, service, affect and authenticity. These 5 ideas are develop in the new book "Curating Spaces of Hope: Transformational Leadership for Uncertain Times which will be published by SCM Press in early 2025.
Spaces of Hope:
Over the last 15 years, Matthew has developed Spaces of hope as a means of responding to 'living with liminality'. This is a response to the uncertainty that shapes our day to day lives. Through his own lived experience, a social movement based approach, dialogue gatherings with people numbering in the 1000s, doctoral research across different organisations in the north west of England, and now post-doctoral and consultancy work with civic, political and education institutions, Spaces of Hope has been developed as an organisational paradigm and leadership methodology, which begins with a simple question, what gives you hope?
